It may be useful at times to estimate for patients how much of the fluoride that a person ingests is actually retained in the body. This article estimates the number at 20% of ingested fluoride. Limitations of the study include size (60 participants), and gender biasing (all participants were female). It is also unclear how the ingested fluoride is distributed between the soft tissues, skeleton, and teeth.
